Summer has come and gone (mostly). And so have the lambs. Last week was the county fair, which means my family basically lived at the fairgrounds. The kids fed animals, cleaned stalls, washed, showed, interviewed, etc. etc. etc. forever and ever and ever until everyone was so exhausted and hungry and smelly and smiley that they will remember the week forever.
But that’s not the best part. The BEST part of the county fair is how our community gathered together to support the children. In the weeks leading up to the fair, the 4H kids dressed up in collared shirts and ties and visited local businesses with an invitation to attend the fair auction. After investing money, time, and significant effort into raising their market animals for this auction, the kids rely on the support of their community to make a good sale, the profits of which are typically used for education.
Our local businesses did not disappoint! I love how they rallied together during the auction. They huddled beforehand to decide amongst themselves who was buying which animal and how much they could raise the bids. Then they bid against each other for the animals until the bids were high enough for the kids to make a profit. It was fantastic and humbling to be on the receiving end of their support, and their generous spirit and investment in these children make us want to continue the cycle and give back to our community as well. Talk about a super week.
I didn’t get much writing done, on account of the fair and other activities (I will post about my camp counselor experience next time), but never fear! PREDATOR is still on track for release in October.
Until next time.
